Welcome to this in-depth La La Land Christian review, a reflection I have eagerly anticipated sharing. The overarching themes of this film mirror so much of my own journey. Having grown up in an environment shaped by music—with a father who worked as an orchestra conductor—the orchestral arrangements and rich musicality in La La Land feel deeply familiar and personal to me.

There is also a memorable behind-the-scenes story from my career. Back when I worked at an advertising agency in South Korea as a commercial editor, our agency produced a promotional video for the iconic Lotte World Tower. The main director envisioned the commercial unfolding like a dynamic musical inspired directly by La La Land. For nearly a month, I analyzed La La Land references hundreds of times. In particular, the scene where Sebastian and Mia dance beneath the starlit sky at the Griffith Observatory was etched into my mind frame by frame. Although nearly a decade has passed since those intensive editing sessions, the film remains one of the most impactful cinematic experiences of my life.

Being able to reflect on this beloved film through the lens of a Christian worldview is truly a joy. Here is how we can understand La La Land in light of faith, purpose, and God’s sovereign plan.

When Dreams Demand a Cost

Damien Chazelle’s La La Land is far more than a visually stunning homage to classic Hollywood musicals. As someone who appreciates musical cinema—and fondly remembers films like Mamma Mia!—I found La La Land exceptionally poignant. At its core, the movie is a bittersweet exploration of ambition, romance, and the sacrifices inevitably required to fulfill one’s calling.

Like many viewers, I found myself moved to tears during the closing moments. Mia endures demoralizing auditions that challenge her self-worth, while Sebastian refuses to compromise his dedication to authentic jazz. As their paths intertwine, they inspire one another to pursue their artistic callings, only to realize that chasing those dreams carries a profound personal cost.

Modern culture frequently idolizes passion as the ultimate virtue, urging us to secure wealth and recognition at all costs. Yet La La Land delivers a far more mature reality: dreams are rarely fulfilled in isolation, and walking toward our true purpose often demands painful surrender. When we eventually return to dust, we carry none of this world’s accolades with us. True peace begins when our ultimate destination is anchored in eternity rather than temporal success.

Stewarding Our Gifts in a Broken World

Both Mia and Sebastian possess authentic creative gifts, yet both face intense frustration when the world ignores their worth. Sebastian compromises by playing in a commercial pop band to survive financially, while Mia pours everything into a self-written play only to face an empty auditorium.

This tension reflects the Christian calling of stewardship. God equips each of us with unique talents and creative callings, yet the world rarely hands us an easy platform. In hyper-competitive environments where success is narrowly defined by prestige, it is easy for individuals to lose sight of why God gave them those gifts in the first place.

Our ultimate aim cannot be worldly power, money, or applause. Our creative labor finds its true fulfillment when used to honor the One who bestowed the gifts, living each day for His glory rather than human approval.

The Reality of Seasonality and Trusting God’s Higher Plan

The closing sequence of La La Land is one of modern cinema’s most evocative moments. Through an alternate-reality dream sequence, we glimpse what might have been if Mia and Sebastian had stayed together. Yet reality returns: both achieved their artistic ambitions, but their lives moved in entirely separate directions. They exchange a quiet, gracious smile before parting ways.

Life moves through distinct seasons. Certain people enter our lives not to remain permanently, but to refine us and help us grow for the road ahead. When we recognize God’s sovereign hand, we are set free from lingering regret and worldly attachment. Even when relationships diverge and plans shift, we can trust that God orchestrates our steps with eternal wisdom. (Much like the unseen guiding love explored in our previous reflection on Interstellar, God continues to guide our lives through every dimension of time and circumstance.)

Mia and Sebastian sharpened each other for their respective journeys. Likewise, we can thank God for every person and season that shaped us. As the Apostle Paul powerfully reminds us, all worldly achievements and temporal gains pale in comparison to knowing Christ:

“What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.”

Philippians 3:8 (NIV)

Our ultimate joy is anchored not in career milestones or alternate realities, but in His unchanging grace.

As you reflect on your own journey today, which musical sequence of life are you currently walking through?
