The Netflix documentary In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal can be seen as the ultimate culmination of gaslighting and spiritual deception, integrating the core themes of The Tinder Swindler and Justice for Mica that I reviewed earlier.

Since I graduated from a Christian university, I had the opportunity to study deeply about the characteristics and harms of cults and pseudo-religions during my college years. Although this documentary does not cover every cult sect in South Korea, watching the atrocities of representative pseudo-religious groups like JMS, Odaeyang, Baby Garden, and Manmin Central Church, my heart ached deeply witnessing the painful reality of how easily people in Korea give their hearts to cults and have their souls stolen. Let us share how we should view this horrific tragedy through the lens of a Christian worldview and what kind of spiritual discernment we must possess.

The Deception that Exploits Humanity’s Most Vulnerable Gaps

Cults and pseudo-religions do not approach with the face of a monster from the beginning. They cleverly exploit the vulnerable links where people are most susceptible to temptation—namely “money, relationships,” and the issue of “health and illness,” which is particularly sensitive in Korean society. They approach those pushed to the edge of a cliff in desperation or those feeling profound loneliness, performing miracles and acting as the warmest comforters.

This deception ultimately makes followers completely lose their reason, leading to the horrific result of blindly deifying a weak, corrupt “human” as “God” and forcing absolute submission. Deceived by the sweet bait of miracles right before their eyes and immediate problem-solving, the tragedy unfolds where they sell their eternal life to scammers at a bargain price.

The False Truth that Destroys the Family Created by God

The most prominent characteristic and vicious crime of the cults featured in the documentary is the “destruction of the family.” After brainwashing followers into believing that their doctrine is the only truth, they label family members living together as temptations of Satan or the devil, making the followers thoroughly reject them. They prevent followers from returning home and force them to constantly obsess over their own distorted “Bible studies” and gatherings outside, thoroughly isolating them from society and their families.

However, from a biblical Christian worldview, this is an absolute lie. In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the very first beautiful community He established was the “family.” If there is a god or doctrine that destroys the family created directly by God, severs the heavenly bond between parents and children, and promotes division, it absolutely does not come from God.

Forced Offerings that Cannot Be a Condition for Salvation

Pseudo-religious groups commonly exploited the labor of their followers ruthlessly and forced massive offerings to line the pockets of their leaders. At this point, I cannot help but revisit the true essence of offering.

Whether it is tithes, thanksgiving offerings, or mission offerings, the moment someone “forces” them under any pretext within the church, that place has stepped onto the wrong path. Whether our material wealth is abundant or scarce, an offering must be a humble confession of faith—saying, “All my wealth and life are not mine, but solely God’s”—and given with a heart full of sincere gratitude.

If a pastor coercively says, “You must give this much offering to be saved,” or “You must offer money to be healed and receive blessings,” it is no different from the corrupt sale of indulgences in the Middle Ages. The sound of a coin dropping into an offering box will never transfer our souls from hell to heaven. Salvation is given freely only by the grace of the cross of Jesus Christ.

Look to God Beyond the Human Preaching

In the Name of God leaves us with a powerful warning about the tragedy born of blind faith. I earnestly want to urge everyone reading this, as well as myself, once again: Do not blindly look up to the pastor preaching from the pulpit. While it is pastors who deliver sermons on behalf of God from the pulpit, they are just weak “humans” who inevitably stumble and are shaken by the temptation of sin every day, exactly like us.

We must not worship the messenger, but solely look to the “living God” who exists beyond that preaching human. The moment we deify a human and follow them uncritically, that place is no longer a church but deteriorates into a pseudo-religious cult racing toward destruction. Never forget that our only Savior and perfect refuge is not a flawed human leader, but solely God, the sovereign Lord of all creation.

Key Takeaways & Faith Insights

  • Wisdom to Discern Deception: We must thoroughly discern within the Word the spiritual gaslighting of false prophets who exploit humanity’s most vulnerable deficiencies (money, health, loneliness), perform fake miracles, and deify themselves. (Matthew 24:24)
  • God, the Protector of the Family: God created the family and brought them into unity. Any doctrines that sever family ties, promote division, and destroy the home are completely the deceptions of Satan. (Genesis 2:24)
  • Grace and Voluntary Devotion: Salvation is not an indulgence that can be bought with money. All forced offerings are unbiblical, and true offering must be a voluntary and joyful confession acknowledging God’s sovereignty. (2 Corinthians 9:7)
  • Shattering Idolatry Toward Humans: Pastors and spiritual leaders are merely channels to deliver God’s Word, not objects of worship. Our gaze must always be fixed on the eternal God, looking past easily corruptible humans. (Psalm 146:3-4)

“Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save.”

Psalm 146:3
