In this Star Wars Episode 1 Christian Review, we finally explore the epic universe of The Phantom Menace. My birthday happens to be May 4th—internationally celebrated as Star Wars Day! “May the Force be with you!” Living in California, it is a staple conversation starter that never fails to break the ice with new friends or school teachers. That is how ubiquitous it is; almost everyone knows Star Wars.
When I was a little kid, I watched Star Wars for the first time at my aunt’s house in the US. Like any other kid back then, I desperately wanted a lightsaber and a Podracer toy just like the one Anakin raced. However, it wasn’t until I became an adult that I realized how many profound themes could be viewed deeply through a Christian worldview. Thus, I plan to cover the backbone of the series with you: the original and prequel trilogies. Shall we journey to a galaxy far, far away together?
“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…”
1. The Birth of Anakin Skywalker and the Shadow of the ‘Messiah Prophecy’
In the movie, young Anakin’s mother, Shmi Skywalker, tells Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn a surprising story: “There was no father. I carried him, I gave birth, I raised him.” Hearing this, the Jedi come to believe that Anakin is the prophesied figure who will bring balance to the Force, the ‘Chosen One.’
You noticed it right away, didn’t you? It explicitly borrows the motifs of the ‘virgin birth’ and the ‘Messiah prophecy’ to save the world, which are the very core of Christianity. Isaiah 7:14 prophesies:
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”
However, Anakin, who seemed like a perfect savior resembling Jesus, later fails to overcome his inner fear and anger, ultimately falling into the terrible evil known as Darth Vader. Through this tragic fall, we confirm the limitations of an imperfect human savior with a sinful nature, realizing once again that only the sinless Jesus Christ is the true Savior of humanity.
2. ‘The Phantom Menace’: Satan Disguised as an Angel of Light
The subtitle of this movie, The Phantom Menace, superficially refers to the invasion by the Trade Federation. Yet, as you well know, it practically points to Senator Palpatine (Darth Sidious) with his gentle face pretending to advocate for peace. He acts as a loyal politician right under the Jedi’s noses, but behind their unseen backs, he is a Sith Lord inciting division and war throughout the entire galaxy.
The Bible warns us exactly about this in 2 Corinthians 11:14:
“And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”
Satan does not approach us threateningly in the form of a horned monster. In movies, villains rarely appear as villains from the start; they seem like good characters until they take off their masks and reveal their true identity. The devil also hides deep within our lives and communities in the most reasonable and good appearances to cause division and deceive us. We must spiritually discern the ‘unseen threat’ of the evil spirit hiding beyond visible phenomena.
3. The Jedi Order Trapped in the Law and Spiritual Pride
The Jedi Council, the greatest spiritual group and guardians of peace in the universe, appear truly heroic. But if you look closely, they paradoxically fell into very rigid legalism. Trapped in their own rules handed down for thousands of years, they were busy rejecting and condemning the fearful young Anakin rather than embracing him. They were in a state of ‘spiritual blindness,’ completely failing to detect that the greatest evil was growing right in the Senate.
This appearance of the Jedi reminds us of the pride of the Pharisees 2,000 years ago. Just like the Pharisees who could not see the truth because they were trapped in their traditions and legal frameworks—even though the true Savior was right in front of them—it makes us reflect on whether our faith, too, is trapped in religious formalities and legalism, losing the true love and compassion for a single soul.
4. Midi-chlorian Count and the Essence of Grace
One of the most controversial settings in Episode 1 was measuring the potential of the Force through the count of ‘Midi-chlorians,’ which are microscopic cells in the blood. Qui-Gon Jinn takes a sample of Anakin’s blood, measures the count, and gets excited, saying it’s the highest ever. It quantified spiritual potential into biological ‘stats,’ almost feeling like watching combat power scouters in Dragon Ball.
However, in the Christian faith we believe in, God’s grace is never measured by human conditions or stats. Just because you have a good lineage, a high mileage of good deeds, or give a lot of offerings does not mean you can earn God’s love and salvation. We must keep in mind that our faith is not proven by quantified merit like Midi-chlorians, but is a gift given by absolute Grace. Please remember: Faith is not a mileage program.
5. The Impersonal ‘Force’ vs. The Personal God
The ‘Force’ that dominates the Star Wars universe is an energy field that fills all things. Jedi handle this energy and manipulate machines or people through training and meditation. However, the God we believe in is not an impersonal space energy that we can draw and use at will. We live and enjoy life within the providence of the Creator!
Isaiah 1:18 says:
“‘Come now, let us settle the matter,’ says the LORD. ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow…'”
Our God is a Personal God who approaches us first, speaks to us, empathizes with our pain, and wants to build a personal relationship. We must break away from the idolatry of prosperity faith that tries to draw on mystical powers to fulfill our own wishes, and live a life of daily, intimate fellowship with the living, personal Creator.
6. The Death of a Master and the Mission of the Left-Behind Disciple
At the end of the film, the great spiritual master Qui-Gon Jinn meets his death after a fierce duel with Darth Maul, and his disciple Obi-Wan Kenobi is left alone to shoulder the heavy mission of taking Anakin as his apprentice. The moment I saw this, I thought of the relationship between Moses and Joshua.
Just as Joshua filled the place left by Moses, and Timothy inherited Paul’s mission, someone’s dedication and sacrifice are inevitably passed down to the next generation of disciples as a legacy of faith. Like Obi-Wan, who inherited his master’s will even in the sorrow of losing his mentor, we too must become true disciples of Jesus Christ who willingly carry the gospel mission left by the seniors of faith who went before us.
Living in Korea and America, nations built heavily upon the dedication of faithful ancestors, we see the profound impact of Christianity. And please remember: In the future, you too will become seniors of faith in the eyes of the next generation. Therefore, I earnestly hope that you and I will live today fulfilling God’s mission on this earth, loving God even more, for the sake of our beloved next generation!
Comparative Analysis: Midi-chlorians vs. God’s Grace
| Analytical Category | Midi-chlorians (Worldly Metrics) | God’s Grace (Biblical Truth) |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement | Quantifiable biological stats and visible physical potential | The unseen heart, measured solely by God’s unconditional love |
| Condition | Innate pedigree, high cell counts, and personal merit | Given as a free gift through faith alone, regardless of human merit (Eph 2:8-9) |
| Spiritual Result | Spiritual pride, legalism, and reliance on the flesh (The Jedi Fall) | Humble gratitude, true salvation, and reliance on the Cross |
Key Takeaways & Faith Insights
- The True Savior Beyond Flawed Heroes: Unlike Anakin who succumbed to his own darkness, Jesus Christ is the only perfect, sinless Messiah who brings true salvation. (Isaiah 7:14)
- Discerning the Unseen Threat: Just as Palpatine hid in plain sight, Satan masquerades as an angel of light. We must exercise spiritual discernment to see beyond deceptive appearances. (2 Corinthians 11:14)
- Grace Cannot Be Measured: God’s grace is an unconditional gift, not a biological “Midi-chlorian” count or a religious mileage program based on human merit. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
- Passing the Torch of Faith: Like Obi-Wan taking up Qui-Gon’s mantle, we are called to carry forward the gospel mission passed down by our ancestors of faith for the next generation. (2 Timothy 2:2)
“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”
