Welcome, everyone to this Buy Now Shopping Conspiracy Christian Review as we uncover corporate manipulation, discern spiritual deception in modern consumerism, and recover practical biblical stewardship without guilt. I just watched the newly released documentary on Netflix, Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy (2024). As I watched this work starkly expose how mega-corporations pry open our wallets and force us to run endlessly on the consumer hamster wheel, I was struck with profound shock and, at the same time, plunged into deep spiritual meditation.

Just as Big Tech insiders warned of algorithmic dangers in The Social Dilemma, which I covered in the past, former employees of Amazon and Adidas, alongside product designers, step directly in front of the camera to deliver shocking corporate whistleblowing testimonies. The raw face of modern capitalism laid bare by them was far more alarming than I had ever imagined.

Every day, we unlock our smartphones, place orders, and live buried beneath mountains of delivery boxes. Yet today, standing before the massive shopping conspiracy exposed by this documentary, with what kind of eyes ought we Christians to navigate this world?

1. Sasha’s 5 Rules: The Whisper of the Enemy in My Ears

The most chilling scene in the documentary was the appearance of the AI influencer “Sasha,” explaining the five rules of buying that mega-corporations utilize to manipulate consumers. Listening throughout to those rules delivered with Sasha’s smiling face, I could not shake off the thought that they sounded just like the “whisper of the devil” sweetly speaking into my ears today, much like the serpent tempting Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Corporations deliberately engineer perfectly functional products to break down quickly or become outdated through “Planned Obsolescence.” Under the guise of environmental protection, they swap packaging and deceive our consciences through “Greenwashing,” while in reality generating far more garbage. They constantly whisper to us:

“Do not repair; buy new. The more you possess, the happier you will become. Hand over your control to us.”

The enemy is always the father of lies. He ceaselessly deceives us into filling the empty spaces of our souls—which only God should satisfy—with meaningless possessions and feelings of deficiency. This era’s massive commercial system, orchestrating deceitful marketing under the pretext of environmentalism while piling up mountains of waste, demonstrates with absolute clarity how spiritually awake Christians must remain to discern reality.

2. Freedom and Responsibility of Stewards in the World, Not Radical Boycotts

Whenever I publish reviews of investigative documentaries on my blog, there is a recurring message I consistently emphasize. It was the same when I wrote reviews for Seaspiracy and Blackfish. Having watched those documentaries, my intention was never to incite people by saying, “From now on, let us never eat fish again!” or “Every aquarium like SeaWorld must be burned to the ground!”

The same holds true for this review of Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy. I am by no means telling you in an extreme manner: “Let us never buy plastic again!”, “Let us delete our Amazon accounts immediately and never use them!”, or “We must repair our phones and use them for ten years until they completely die!”

We Christians are not beings called to flee outside this world. We are called to live coexisting in the midst of this culture, inevitably interacting with it and enjoying the civilization of this earth. If we were to apply such extreme standards, we would not even be permitted to watch secular culture or cinema at all.

We must consume in order to sustain our daily lives. Living ordinary routines, we inevitably end up using products containing microplastics, and there are times when we need to upgrade our phones for work and communication when new devices arrive. God did not bind us in ascetic chains; rather, He granted us free will to enjoy this world. Therefore, I hope you do not carry overwhelming “guilt” regarding your everyday consumption simply because you watched this documentary.

3. The Difference Between Knowing and Not Knowing: “The New Has Come” Inside the Cart

How, then, should we respond after watching this documentary? This is precisely where we take a step forward differently from the world. Our focus lies in: “How shall we view and steward this reality through a Christian worldview?”

I believe that the difference between knowing and not knowing is truly like night and day. Those who have “come to know” the manipulations and deceits of corporations through this documentary will certainly see a difference, even if slight, between their past selves and their future steps. Just as 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, “The old has gone, the new is here!”, our spending habits and worldview are renewed.

While cutting off all consumption entirely is impossible, taking a single step of change is something anyone can do. Someone who used to unthinkingly grab ten plastic products at the grocery store can choose to reduce that number to five upon realizing this truth. We can pause, even briefly, the habit of aimlessly scrolling through online marketplaces late at night. Someone who impulsively piled fifty items into their Amazon cart can reflect once more and take action to trim it down to the essential forty.

The accumulation of these small decisions—that is precisely how we faithfully live out the “life of a steward” toward the beautiful world God entrusted to our care. Before becoming grand, flawless environmental activists, Christians are those who discover God’s will right inside their own shopping carts, making the world a better place one single step at a time.

4. The Heavenly Home We Will Return to Empty-Handed: A Pilgrimage

What is the ultimate purpose for which we live on this earth? Flaunting wealth by showing off fine clothes and expensive possessions to others, earning vast sums of money, and chasing endless consumption to achieve happiness cannot be the primary purpose of our lives. Following the conclusion of our earthly existence, there is our true “Home”—heaven—waiting for our return.

When we return to that heavenly homeland, do you not know with absolute certainty that we cannot carry even a single gram of the countless items and secular goods we paid for on Amazon today? As 1 Timothy 6:6–7 reminds us:

“For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.”

Furthermore, Jesus warned in Luke 12:15:

“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

What ultimately remains is how faithfully we stewarded this beautiful world given by God, and how we utilized the material resources provided to us to love our neighbors more deeply and love God. I earnestly hope this documentary does not remain merely a video exposing corporate shopping conspiracies, but serves as a precious opportunity for reflection that prompts you and me to ponder, even for a moment, how to build a world pleasing in God’s sight and how to genuinely love our neighbors.

Stopping before our open shopping carts and cluttered shelves today, let us quietly ask our hearts this single question:

“Am I truly purchasing what I genuinely need today, or am I letting the subtle whispers of this world dictate my desires?”

Key Takeaways & Faith Insights

  • Discerning the Enemy’s Whispers: Secular advertising that insists happiness requires endless purchasing is a spiritual deception aimed at filling our spiritual voids with perishable goods. (Luke 12:15)
  • Freedom Over Condemnation: Believers must participate in daily economic life. We need not harbor paralyzing guilt over using modern conveniences like plastics or online retail, but rather navigate life within God-given freedom and balance.
  • The Power of Knowledge and a Single Step: Knowing the truth demands renewal. Reducing our consumption by a single practical step and trimming our carts embodies the true calling of Christian stewardship. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
  • Hope Fixed on the Heavenly Home: None of our earthly possessions can follow us past the grave. Our ultimate focus rests on loving God and our neighbors through the faithful management of the resources entrusted to us. (1 Timothy 6:6–7)

“We are not designed to want more and more; we are conditioned to want more and more. The moment you realize that, the spell is broken.”
